Where to Stay in Spello

There are many options for Spello accommodations, these are ones that I know well enough to recommend. Make sure you tell your host I sent you! I don’t get a kickback or anything, but it does create a connection I Know you’ll enjoy.

Sognando Spello is one of three units in a former dairy at the top of Spello (but still within earshot of Santa Maria Maggiore’s bells) with sweeping views over the Chiona valley. The outer walls of the entire property are actually the ancient walls of Spello. If you peer out and to the right, you’ll spot the arch that’s featured on the cover of Il Bel Centro: A Year in the Beautiful Center. Sognando Spello is billed as a romantic getaway, but I think would also be super for a person traveling alone, as Corrado, who runs the property, is so helpful. The property also includes a two-bedroom unit, Il Muretto, that blows my mind because Monte Subasio actually juts into the living room. The three bedroom option is Amici and Famiglia, which is near and dear to my heart because we lived there for a year. If you’ve loved the photographs from my terrace or from my window, now you know how you can experience that bliss for yourself—making dinner in the outdoor fireplace or the grill, watching the swallows dance, or toasting the end of another fine day in Spello.

Casa Spello is a popular option. It has a garden that looks out over the hills to Bettona and the renovation has kept the authentic charm. Casa Spello has units that can accommodate various group sizes.

Apartamenti Vallegloria features some lovely apartments. The site is in Italian, but Anja speaks perfect English (and German). More IBC trivia—that’s her cat, Birbo, on the cover of my book.

In Urbe is where we always had our guests stay, as it is no-frills (read: budget conscious) and the location on Via Giulia is ideal. Make sure you ask for a room with a view. Also: full disclosure, it’s changed hands since I had friends stay there, so I don’t have current feedback about what it’s like.

If you are looking to splurge, Buonanotte Barbanera has some gorgeous options, including one with a pool. I first saw the property 10 years ago, when I met Andrea, the owner. I took another tour on my last stay and honestly, it was all much more fabulous than I remembered. Andrea’s style is impeccable and every unit is glorious.

For a more modest, but top notch option in the heart of Spello, check out Max and Cristiana’s rental which is right in the centro. Their travel service, ciaoandiamo is a great way to experience the region.

Bookings for You has a variety of possible rentals in Spello and beyond. I haven’t seen the units in person, but I know and trust the owner of the site.
